Description: A competition winning design that reflects the current use of these Grade II buildings.
Located at Green Dragon Yard, The Georgian Theatre and Green Dragon Studios are at the heart of Stockton-on-Tees cultural quarter. The brief was for a creative design solution to link three public entrances on these two buildings. The Ironwork Studio’s concept was based on sound waves, as the Theatre is a music venue and the Green Dragon is a recording studio. We designed the entrances to be colourful and eye-catching, defining and promoting the venues and businesses to all who pass by. They are both lit at night, from within the reception areas, with light spilling out through the glazed panels to provide an inviting glow & let people know they are open. The transparent portion of the entry doors and sidelights is slumped glass, enabling us to incorporate the pattern made by the iron elements into the glass also. In specifying the work, the uses of the existing entrances were a prime consideration, as any design had to be functional, robust, maintainable, and the materials had to be fit for purpose and comply with relevant health and safety policies. All entrances were governed by public building regulations, with two being the principal disabled access and fire escape. Listed building consent was also required
